The Enneagram in Brazil

There are multiple success cases of organizations using the Enneagram in Brazil and its applications are growing fast in the country's emerging business sector. Known for its openness to what is new and for being a place where different cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds meet, Brazil has been welcoming the use of the Enneagram in all areas of society – and organizations are not different.

In fact, a very significant number of local and multinational organizations operating in Brazil are currently using the Enneagram. Some of these include: Alpargatas, Andrade Gutierrez, Avon, Axismed, Bradesco, Camargo Correa, Chemtura, Cosan, Cyrela, Eaton, Ecoimagem, Editora Abril, Elektro, Embraer, Emerson Network Power, Farmasa, Gerdau, Hospital Sao Rafael, Itau, Lopes, Mangels, Mira Transportes, Nossa Caixa, Oi, Oracle, Perdigão, Skanska, Skincariol, Souza Cruz, Stora Enso, Telefonica, Terra Viva, Tractebel, Unibanco, Unilever, Vale, Vivo, Votorantim, and Yahoo.

Some of these organizations have positioned the Enneagram as a central approach for people development in all areas and have been organizing Enneagram-based training, coaching, and consulting programs for several years, sometimes involving thousands of employees. Others have used the system for one or a few specific teams once or twice.

With a tendency for creativity, organizations in Brazil have been sponsoring a profusion of different in-company Enneagram applications. While the most common ones are leadership development, coaching, teams, and conflict, there are other approaches in personal productivity/time management, negotiation, influence without authority, and managerial development. A few organizations that have workshops with practical applications start to demand more in-depth Enneagram training, targeting human development (both because of a sense that this system has much more to offer and because of the passion it raises in people). Besides, a few organizations are heading to use the Enneagram as a change management method, aiming for a broader cultural transformation.

The Enneagram in Colombia

The use of the Enneagram in Colombia is not easily traceable. Apparently the Jesuits introduced it, two or three decades ago, starting a growing Enneagram spiritual tradition. Organizations employed it in a humanistic way, looking for the personal growth of its workers after the huge impact the Enneagram had on their CEOs: at least three hundred employees of the sugar mill Azúcar Manuelita went to a two- or three-day workshop to explore their ego and have a glance of their essence. Such was the case of Sucromiles, a chemical company based in Cali, as well. Today, some companies in Bogota, Manizales, Cali, Medellin, and some other cities, in a shy effort to develop more emotional intelligence in their cultures, send from time to time a short number of people to the spiritually oriented workshops.

Only six years ago a more systematic attempt was initiated to adapt the original tradition to the world and language of organizations. It was first used to make profiles of the North American and Colombian negotiators in the Free Trade Agreement USA-Colombia, to smooth the personal interactions in a process where the differences of power and the consequent hardball negotiation style from the Americans was foreseeable. The Colombian team reached 85% of its original goals in the negotiation. The Enneagram was very useful to overcome impasses through a good relationship-based approach.

This last experience, and the significant contact with Ginger Lapid-Bogda's in-depth work, made possible a more systematic teaching of the Enneagram and its use in negotiation processes at the Universidad de los Andes's Executive Education programs.

Negotiations training is in very high demand, and it has been a good channel to introduce the Enneagram in organizations where it is sometimes seen as a sect's tool. (This label may be a symptom of the resistance in our patriarchal culture, based on fear and scarcity, to touch the "feminine" emotional and inner worlds.) The acceptance of the newly born consciousness and the unseen spontaneous openness is very touching. The family-owned newspaper La Patria in Manizales accepted the Enneagram as an approach to integrate members of the family with employees. A group of "candidates to-be partners" immersed in an extensive in-house Executive Training program at Deloitte & Touche considered the Enneagram as the most useful resource for their development: the new approach to negotiation, communication, conflict resolution, feedback, and team building transformed their attitude and approach to their work. Maybe the first step to a more spiritual organization?

The Enneagram is in the syllabus of the training of future Colombian diplomats at the Academia Diplomática de San Carlos, the government's official training school. In the near future, it will be introduced to British Petroleum and Citibank. The seed is there and the tree is starting to grow, slowly but steadily.
